AVL*Jousse Entreprise

Joep van Lieshout lives and works in Rotterdam. Since the early eighties he produces objects in mainly bright colored polyester, the material that would become his trademark in subsequent years.

In 1995 he founded Atelier Van Lieshout  (AVL), undermining the myth of the individual artistic genius. AVL is a multidisciplinary company that operates internationally in the field of contemporary art, design and architecture. These works of art are practical, uncomplicated and substantial. Recurring themes in the work of AVL are autarky, power, politics and the more classical themes of life and death.

The name Atelier Van Lieshout emphasizes the fact that the works of art do not stem solely from the creative brain of Joep van Lieshout, but are produced by a creative team.

Dynamo Hotel Unit

Dynamo self-supporting unit that functions as a mobile hotel room. The  interior is not much larger than a double bed and is equipped with the basics: a mattress, sheets, blankets, a nightlight and a electricity outlet.

The work varies from sculptures and, bathrooms and mobile home units to complete architectural refurbishments. One of the many applications and techniques used by AVL are the large polyester constructions in striking, bright colors. These polyester constructions, of which the large mobile home units are the best known, form the AVL trademark. For a number of years now the focus has no longer been on standardized, made-to-order furniture, but has shifted to works of art that can be used for a self-sufficient and independent lifestyle. In addition to this development and the production of applied art, the Atelier also realizes many autonomous art projects.

Works of AVL can be found in several international museums and in private collections such as at the Jousse Entreprise Gallery, in Paris. Jousse Entreprise represents well-known architects and designers by showing their furniture pieces but also contemporary art. Among others, names like Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier, Pierre Guariche, Pierre Jeanneret, Georges Jouve and Mathieu Matégot are some of the artist who have there their pieces.
