In 1985, the gallery started is first extensive inventory focused in the work of George Nakashima. Since that time, Moderne Gallery is the world’s leading Nakashima dealer.
George Katsutoshi Nakashima was born in 1905 and grew up in the forests of the Olympic Peninsula. He studied architecture at the University of Washington and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In first hand, George Nakashima purchased is a parcel of land where he designed and built his house.
After that, he began to build furniture for churches, corporate headquarters and private homes . He considered Furniture like architecture, but only on a different scale. He started is business as a one-man shop and continued to operate on this principle throughout his career.
A master craftsman and woodworker, created is own a distinctive style using wood in his furniture , like he said, he gave “a second life” to the trees he loved so much. He was really connected and intimidated to the nature “in its multifaceted moods is one of the greatest experiences of life.”
Nakashima received a bunch of awards, including the Gold Craftsmanship Medal of the American Institute of Architects (1952) and recognition of the cultural exchange generated by the shows he produced in Japan.
