Temporary Museum * Milan 2013

This year, the Temporary Museum for New Design organized for the Fuori Salone by Superstudio Group, based on a project by Gisella Borioli and with the art direction of Giulio Cappellini, will be held, as always, at the two iconic locations in Milan, in the Tortona district: Superstudio Più,  at Via Tortona 27 (10,000 m²) and the historical Superstudio 13, the famous pioneering photographic studies opened in 1983, at Via Forcella 13/Via Bugatti 9 (2,000 m²), during the Design Week, between 9th and 14th April.

The theme is Global Design, acknowledging that in the new millennium the influence of design, understood as a shift toward “things” that are increasingly emotional, playful, functional, technological, individual and seductive, has spilled over from the simple “invention” of new pieces of furniture to solutions for every sector of life, from devices that we use all the time to cars, fashion and “outdoor” activities, to traditional or innovative materials, to art, to the objects and moments of everyday existence and all the way to such extreme expressions as food design or nail design, all of them once again reflecting this trend.

So the route through the Temporary Museum for New Design 2013 winds through installations and displays that present the evolution of design in all its forms: major international brands and famous designers with “exhibitions” that speak to us of the future. But there will also be spaces devoted to research, to the young designers.

GLOBAL DESIGN: HOME, TECHNOLOGY, LIFE

The main area of the Temporary Museum is the Global Design, they presents the large-scale virtual installations of Hyundai , with a demonstration of how an immaterial automobile is born out of wind and water; of Samsung, with the high-tech innovations of the South Korean giant, curated by the visionary designer François Confino; of Alcantara, with a Cinerama projection on climate change using the incredible videos of the multimedia artist Jared Mezzocchi; of Kaneka with its imaginative tunnel of OLEDs; etc.

DISCOVERING, RESEARCH AND NEW TALENTS

In the Basement of Superstudio Più you will find “Discovering, Other Worlds, Other Talents, Other Ideas”, a research space devoted to new manufacturers and new talents: around twenty names proposing romantic, technological, interactive and interesting objects.

FREEDOMDESIGN, CREATIVE PEOPLE AND ARTISANS AT LIBERTY

The new project freedomDesign gets underway at Superstudio 13: a space of freedom, a “bazaar” of good ideas that offers very small spaces in an effervescent setting to all those creative people who will show and sell work that lies outside the bounds of industrial production. Talented names such as Aiko Telgen, Kubico, Urbo, WoodOut, etc.

CONTAINERS, A NEW WAY OF EXHIBITING AND INHABITING

Another theme of great topicality is the ISBU (Intermodal Steel Building Units and Container Homes), explored in the external area of Superstudio through several proposals. The art of the Marshal Office of the Wielkopolska Region is represented by a white container branded Poland. ZAVA ’s red two-story structure is at once a reception area and an exhibition space for its lamps. The ecological-technological house of the Brazilian Itinerant Structures is an example of a nomadic habitat where the “container” becomes a eco-technological modular living-space.

ART INTERACTIONS, CONTEMPORARY ART HOLDS A DIALOGUE WITH SPACE

Exploring the increasingly porous boundaries between contemporary art and design, but also underlining the proximity in time of Miart and the Salone del Mobile , we have Art Interactions, site-specific interventions entrusted to avant-garde artists who work with light, video, interactivity, space and the web, organized and curated directly by Superstudio. Among them, the 3D projections of Apparati Effimeri, the luminous installations of Carlo Bernardini, the interactive video-world of ProvocActionArt and the interplay of lights, colors and sensations of Romano Baratta, all realized in collaboration with the HiWhim portal.
