Mirage Exhibition by James Reka // Mathgoth Gallery

James Reka, aka RekaOne, started his career with traditional graffiti in 1999. He is a self-taught artist from Australia based in Berlin. For his very first solo exhibition at Galerie Mathgoth, the “Mirage Exhibition”, Reka proposes to immerse her audience in a “Mirage”.

On large formats, we find his often female creatures, undulating and almost aquatic, appeared in his works in 2003. But instead of being the main subject, they are an element in a set of abstract landscapes. In addition to the paintings, the artist has also worked on ordinary objects and used aerosol cans. Reka: “This exhibition is almost like a mood board that explores the theme of mirage, our vision can be misleading. In a mirage exhibition, you see what you want to see.

Merging classic and popular backgrounds, the artist likes to break the boundaries between forms and contours: on walls or on canvas, the characters or objects interlock with each other in one and the same plane by the game of astonishing rectilinear meanders: one must almost squint to see what is hidden there.

A mirage which is also a turn towards abstraction, where Cubism takes the ascendancy on Surrealism – two artistic movements where it draws its inspiration.
